Patrons News - June 2011

Eastbourne R.F.C Patrons Association: Summer Bulletin June 2011

The sad events of May are very much with us, but it was heartening to see Jane and Fraser back at the Club at The AGM and ready to re-join our rugby family. Their commitment is a fine example to us all. On a business matter club subs have gone up to £200 for players, but Patrons still pay only £50.

Andy Tobin has been appointed as a fifth director to the board. Congratulations. He is also a new HLM,as is Rick Platt. Well done.

Our thoughts also with Terry Norman who lost his wife Marion at the end of April. The Club was well-represented at the funeral and at a reception later at the Royal Navy Old Comrades. Also great thanks to Terry for the donation of his amazing scrapbooks to the exhibition and the archives.

Over 50 people came to the Exhibition of The History of Eastbourne Rugby Club at the end of May. The exhibition was well-received and we shall hold it again in the autumn and next spring.

By this time next year I hope to have started the actual writing ! Any further documents, letters, minutes, memoirs and memories you wish to share? I shall be pleased to receive any contribution.

Once the history is written the intention is to establish a permanent archive for the club, if not a rugby library and museum. Also an oral history is planned.

Thanks to Steve & Louisa Snell and Hugh Graham for their help. Also Emily & staff behind the bar.

The postponed club ball will be held in the autumn. Please watch this space and keep your dinner jackets at the ready.

Shortly before the exhibition I completed the South Downs Way as planned in 10 days. Only minor aches and pains resulted. I am still walking and standing upright (most of the time).

I managed to raise £325, most of which will go to the Club. The remainder, as indicated, will go to the Lifeboat. A very warm thanks to my sponsors for their generous contributions.

Perhaps we can organize a Patrons’ Sponsored Walk this season to get the old bones moving and initiate a bit of fitness for those older members who are not already engaged in regular exercise. Just to offset the pints (and red wine) we surreptitiously quaff of an evening.

The Royal College of Psychiatrists has recommended that people over 65 drink only 11 units of alcohol a week. That’s 5 ½ pints of Harveys a week ! Royal College of Psychiatrists? They must be crazy!.

There will be a golf day at The Willingdon Golf Club on Friday August 5th This is a charity event to support families who have lost teenage children.

Helpers welcome. Please contact Jane Brooks on .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or 07828 015711

A date for your calendar is a Vets Touch tournament Friday 26th August heralding a 3-day Beer festival at The Club with Rick Walshaw’s “Super Tens” on Saturday and Sunday 27th, 28th August.
